Why gaming headsets aren't always the best choice for listening to music and what benefits they provide.

Sometimes, to improve the gaming properties of headsets, manufacturers perform special tuning of the sound they reproduce. Amplification of a certain frequency spectrum gives the player a significant advantage in multiplayer games - footsteps or activation of enemy abilities sound louder and clearer, which allows you to receive important information much earlier.

How does it all work?

  1. Bass drowns out important sounds
    Low frequencies (20-250Hz) create powerful but vague waves that can drown out details in the mid-high range. In games, it is quite important to hear such events as: footsteps, reloading, changing position, speech/enemies. Strong bass (for example, from explosions or a soundtrack) literally drowns out or masks these sounds. In conclusion: if you want to gain an advantage over your opponent through sound - a lot of bass will only interfere.
  2. The brain recognizes high-frequency details faster
    Our hearing aid is better at picking up high-frequency changes – they are more clearly localized and processed faster. We have boosted 3-6kHz (and a little up to 8kHz) which gives a sense of precision, and reducing the bass enhances this impression.
  3. Dense bass creates acoustic fatigue
    If you play for 3-4 hours - excessive bass causes ear and brain fatigue, especially in closed headphones. Reducing the bass makes micro-events (small and short-duration sounds) more intelligible and reduces the cognitive load on the listener.
  4. Stage Balance (for positioning)
    Reducing the "lows" opens up the stage - especially important in headsets that use various applications with virtual 7.1 or Spatial audio. Example: in CS2, PUBG, Warzone, Valorant or ApexLegends you need to hear direction and distance - excess bass makes this difficult. 

Considering all these factors, on certain headset models, we have made a sound profile with a low bass level in the range of 20Hz-250Hz, which gives you full control of the space in shooters and a greater advantage over "bass" headsets. The only drawback that arises as a result is that for music or movies you need to use any available equalizer with additional personal settings.
